COMMANDER'S MESSAGE FOR POST SCRIPT
(Dec. of 2009, Jan. of 2010 and Feb. of 2010)

Commander’s Message: We are not quite at the midway point in November as I compose this, and I am impressed with the number of activities in which Post 38 has already been involved since the last issue of "The Postscript."  I think one of the benefits of this surge in activity is a greater public awareness and appreciation for our unit.  Our Veterans Day presentation at the Haddonfield Middle School on November 9th was extraordinarily well received, attracting extensive local TV coverage, and strengthening even further the wonderful relationship that has evolved between us, the students and the faculty of that school.  And when cold rainy weather forced us indoors for the Veterans Day presentation at the High School on November 11th, the end result was not only a more comfortable venue for participants and audience alike, but it allowed us to get an unprecedented number of high school students into the audience, as teachers directed some classes of students to our presentation.  Now there is discussion of scheduling the ceremony in the auditorium, eliminating inclement weather as a factor and getting more high school students involved for 2010 and beyond.  Along those lines, discussion has also started regarding a Post 38 breakfast before the HMHS presentation, and / or a post-presentation get together (open house at the Post) as we had this year for the first time.

Bob Phillips, our Department (State) Commander, came to our Post on November 11^th, adding further to the prestige of the get together.  At one point, there were approximately twenty veterans socializing .  We've further discussed the possibility of a once-a-month Saturday morning breakfast.  Those members who are reluctant to drive at night could avail themselves of a daytime opportunity to interact with their comrades.  These are just a few of the many positive innovations which, I think, will strengthen our organization by attracting talented, active Legionnaires.

Our Borough officials have long supported our mission, and the relationship between the borough and the American Legion is stronger than ever.  Mayor Colombi, Co-Chairman of the "Women in Government" committee of the League of Municipalities sponsored a first time ever event "A Solute to Women in the Military" attended by more than one hundred and fifty women in New Jersey government in November, at the annual league convention.  This is just a snapshot of the broad variety of activities your post has been part of, either directly or indirectly in just the past three months.          

A core group of Legionnaires have taken on the brunt of this increased activity without complaint, I hasten to add, but they need reinforcement because the load is pretty heavy.  Since we are approaching the time of year when we make resolutions to be better people in the coming year, why not resolve to take a more active role in Post 38 in 2010.  Do it now.  You're gonna' like the way it makes you feel.................
